In a shift among Europe’s busiest airports, Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow in passenger numbers for July, handling 8.15 million travelers compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This marks a notable change from the previous year, as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger traffic, while Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase. The decline at Heathrow has been partially attributed to disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East.
The latest figures have intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s ambitious expansion project, which includes a proposed third runway. Currently, Heathrow operates near full capacity with its two runways. The proposed £33 billion expansion aims to bolster the airport’s annual passenger capacity to around 150 million, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity and supporting trade and tourism.
Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and 24-hour operation. It currently operates three runways and is on track to introduce a fourth by the end of 2026. This expansion positions Istanbul Airport as a growing hub in the region, leveraging its size and operational flexibility to accommodate increasing passenger demand.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are also seeing record levels of activity. London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest July ever, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester recording 3.4 million. This trend underscores the rising demand for air travel within and from the UK, highlighting the need for strategic infrastructure developments to meet future travel demands.
