Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin has warned that the full extent of the suffering in Gaza could “shame the world” once all evidence and testimonies are fully documented. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Martin criticized the international community for failing Palestine and highlighted the lack of significant progress from past peace efforts in the region.

Martin expressed concern over actions that complicate the feasibility of a two-state solution, particularly pointing to violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank who, he claims, act with near-total impunity. He described the ongoing displacement and destruction faced by Palestinian communities as amounting to ethnic cleansing. Martin reiterated Ireland’s unwavering support for the two-state solution, emphasizing that both Palestinian and Israeli states must coexist peacefully and securely.

In his address, Martin also called for renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran, stressing that while Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, its destabilizing activities in the region should cease. He urged countries to support international institutions like the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, emphasizing a global commitment to peace, human rights, and development.

Martin’s speech also touched upon the war in Ukraine, noting that while Russia has the power to end its attacks, it has chosen to continue the conflict, leading to higher global food and energy costs. This ongoing situation remains a critical focus of international concern.

Additionally, Ireland is pursuing a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, underscoring its commitment to global human rights advocacy.
