Fine Gael Selects Candidate for November Seanad Bye-Election

by admin477351

Ireland is gearing up for a Seanad bye-election to address a vacancy on the Cultural and Educational Panel, following Seán Kyne’s return to the Dáil after his election in the Galway West bye-election this past May. As the nomination window closes on October 6, political parties are finalizing their candidates for the upcoming contest.

Ray McAdam, who has previously served as Dublin City Lord Mayor and a city councillor, has been nominated as the Fine Gael candidate. McAdam also participated in the Dublin Central Dáil bye-election earlier this year. His candidacy adds a familiar face to the race as Fine Gael seeks to retain the seat vacated by Kyne.

The election process will see 234 members of the Dáil and Seanad casting their votes, with ballot papers to be distributed on October 23. The voting period will conclude on November 6, 2026, determining the new representative for the Cultural and Educational Panel. Notably, this bye-election is decided by members of the Oireachtas, without a public vote, reflecting the unique structure of the Seanad’s vocational panels.

As the deadline for nominations nears, other political parties continue to deliberate over their potential candidates, with discussions ongoing among opposition groups. The outcome of these deliberations will shape the final lineup for the election, as parties strategize to increase their representation in the Seanad.
