The investigation into alumina exports from the Russian-controlled Aughinish Alumina facility in County Limerick has concluded without definitive evidence linking the material to Russian weapons manufacturers, according to Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin. Speaking in Kyiv alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Martin noted that the findings would soon be presented to the European Commission for further review. Although investigators did not find conclusive proof that the exports were being used by Russia’s arms industry, they could not entirely dismiss the possibility, indicating the matter remains a concern for both Ireland and Europe.
During his visit to Ukraine, Martin also declared a significant increase in Irish support for the country, announcing €125 million in additional aid. Of the total, €100 million is earmarked for non-lethal military assistance to bolster Ukraine’s air defense systems, while the remaining €25 million will focus on safeguarding and restoring critical energy infrastructure as winter approaches. This financial commitment underscores Ireland’s ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing challenges.
In addition to financial aid, Martin reiterated Ireland’s backing of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union. He emphasized that advancing Ukraine’s EU membership application would remain a top priority during Ireland’s EU presidency. This pledge highlights Ireland’s commitment to supporting Ukraine on its path towards European integration.
Martin’s trip to Kyiv also includes scheduled meetings with Ukrainian parliamentary leaders, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and members of the Irish community residing in the Ukrainian capital. These engagements aim to strengthen bilateral relations and reinforce Ireland’s solidarity with Ukraine as it navigates a complex geopolitical landscape.
