Hungarian representatives from the FIDESZ–KDNP party in the European Parliament have expressed concerns over what they perceive as the European Commission’s silence on recent changes in Hungary’s constitutional and political landscape. These lawmakers argue that such developments could potentially weaken the country’s democratic institutions.
During a session involving the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László pressed for the Commission to make its stance known regarding several contentious issues. These include amendments to the constitution, limitations on political competition, alterations affecting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation highlighted that the European Commission had previously cited concerns about Hungary’s adherence to the rule of law, resulting in the suspension of EU funding. Despite these initial actions, the lawmakers criticized the Commission for its lack of response to the latest constitutional changes, questioning their alignment with European democratic norms.
Emphasizing the need for consistent application of democratic principles across all EU member states, the Hungarian MEPs underscored the importance of uniform standards to maintain the integrity of the European Union. However, representatives from the Commission did not provide comprehensive answers to the queries raised during the meeting.
