Meta Platforms has swiftly pulled the plug on its recently launched Muse Image AI feature amid a storm of criticism centered on privacy issues and its utilization of public Instagram content. The image-generation tool, which premiered earlier this week, offered users the ability to craft and modify AI-generated images using pictures publicly shared on Instagram. Integrated into Meta AI, it facilitated image editing through sketches and photo prompts.
The debut of this feature drew immediate backlash, particularly because it was activated by default for eligible users. Critics, including the entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA and several public figures, voiced their concerns over the lack of consent and the implications of using public images in AI-generated outputs. They argued that users should have been given the option to opt in before their images could be employed by the tool.
In light of the widespread disapproval, Meta acknowledged that the feature did not align with users’ expectations and confirmed its removal.
