In a significant move to bolster regional ties and support the EU membership ambitions of the Western Balkans, leaders from the European Union and the Western Balkans convened in Tivat, Montenegro. This summit, following the previous meeting in Brussels six months earlier, centered around the theme “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the EU and the Western Balkans.” The discussions prioritized EU enlargement, economic integration, security cooperation, and regional resilience in the face of mounting geopolitical challenges.
EU leaders reiterated their dedication to the membership goals of Western Balkan countries and assessed the progress in embedding the region into the EU’s economic framework. A focal point of the summit was the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, introduced in 2023, which allocates up to €6 billion to facilitate reforms, investments, and a deeper integration into the EU single market. This financial commitment underscores the EU’s strategic interest in fostering stability and prosperity in the region.
Additionally, the summit served as a platform to discuss boosting cooperation in foreign policy, defense, and cybersecurity. Leaders emphasized the necessity of fortifying defenses against cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and other forms of external interference.
