The European Union has significantly expanded its sanctions against Russia, targeting nearly 1,600 individuals and entities associated with the country’s military-industrial sector. This latest move aims to hinder Russia’s ability to produce weapons and sustain its military efforts in Ukraine.

The sanctions package includes 826 Russian companies and 743 executives, many of whom are involved in the supply of components for missiles, drones, and military aircraft. The measures specifically target supply chains linked to the production and provision of explosives, ammunition, semiconductors, and computer equipment.

In addition to these corporate sanctions, the EU has imposed restrictions on 74 Russian State Duma lawmakers and three members of Russia’s Central Election Commission. These individuals are being sanctioned due to their roles in conducting parliamentary elections in territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

The EU has also taken action beyond Russia, sanctioning three individuals and four entities in North Korea. These sanctions relate to North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and its growing military and economic cooperation with Moscow.

The individuals and entities listed under these sanctions face asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funds or economic resources. Furthermore, sanctioned individuals are banned from traveling across the 27 EU member states.

With these latest measures, the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has risen to nearly 4,600, underscoring the bloc’s ongoing efforts to curtail Moscow’s military and financial capabilities.
