In a strategic move to bolster infrastructure and energy ties, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged up to €200 million in grants to Azerbaijan. This funding aims to enhance transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects and is anticipated to leverage as much as €2 billion in additional public and private investment. The announcement was made during a meeting in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, where discussions centered on energy collaboration, regional connectivity, and the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
The meeting also saw von der Leyen propose a new connectivity partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral ties. President Aliyev highlighted the significant increase in Azerbaijani gas exports to EU countries, noting a 65% rise since the 2022 energy agreement with the EU. As a result of this agreement, ten EU member states are now importing gas from Azerbaijan, marking a substantial shift in energy dynamics within the region.
Von der Leyen also announced a targeted €20 million support program for Azerbaijani border communities. This initiative focuses on several critical areas, including healthcare, mine clearance, rural development, and providing assistance to small businesses. These efforts aim to improve living conditions and promote economic stability in these regions, which are vital for maintaining peace and prosperity.
In addition to her engagements in Azerbaijan, von der Leyen plans to continue her visit to the South Caucasus with talks scheduled in Armenia. This regional tour highlights the EU’s commitment to fostering stability and development in the area, as well as its interest in strengthening partnerships with key players in the region.
