Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin is set to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week, focusing on key global issues such as multilateralism, ongoing conflicts, and international cooperation. As part of the UN’s High-Level Week, Martin will deliver Ireland’s national statement on Thursday, under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
Among the priorities for Martin’s discussions will be the Middle East, particularly the situation in Palestine. He plans to meet with UN agencies to evaluate the conditions in Gaza and the West Bank, expressing concern over the destruction in Gaza, restrictions on humanitarian aid, and the urgent need for adequate shelter as winter approaches.
The war in Ukraine will also be a significant topic during Martin’s address, as he underscores Ireland’s commitment to addressing the conflict. Additionally, the Taoiseach is expected to tackle the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence, highlighting the necessity for global cooperation in managing technological advancements.
Accompanying Martin, Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee and other Irish government officials will engage in meetings that focus on various international issues, including Afghanistan, international development, and humanitarian assistance. These discussions aim to reinforce Ireland’s role in promoting peace and cooperation on the global stage.
