In Ireland, the cost of home heating oil has surged dramatically over the past year, with the average expense to fill a standard 1,000-litre tank reaching €1,443.88 as of September 2026. This marks a significant increase compared to the €909.24 average cost in September 2025, amounting to an additional €534.64, or a 59% rise in just one year.
The sharp increase in heating oil prices is attributed to disruptions in global oil supplies, which have been affected by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. As Ireland predominantly relies on kerosene for home heating, the country’s fuel prices have been particularly impacted. Kerosene’s dual use in both residential heating and aviation has further strained supply, contributing to the price hike.
As colder months approach, many households are seeking to refill their tanks and are actively comparing prices among different suppliers. However, faced with steep costs, consumers are increasingly opting to purchase smaller quantities and delay their purchases, hoping for a potential drop in prices. This situation has sparked renewed calls for government intervention to address the escalating heating oil costs.
Despite these calls, suppliers emphasize that prices are largely dictated by volatile global markets, which can fluctuate significantly day-to-day. Industry officials have dismissed allegations of profiteering, explaining that suppliers operate with limited stocks and are required to purchase oil at current market prices, which are subject to constant change.
