Netflix’s latest addition to the thriller genre, The Whisper Man, revolves around a gripping tale of a father and son entangled in a perilous investigation following a child’s disappearance. The film features Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, a crime novelist and widower who relocates to his hometown with his son, Jake, just as a series of child abductions reminiscent of an imprisoned serial killer’s methods begin to emerge.
Adding to the unraveling mystery, Robert De Niro portrays Pete, a retired detective and Tom’s estranged father. Pete, who once played a crucial role in capturing the serial killer, is compelled to confront his past when Jake goes missing. The investigation is further propelled by Detective Amanda, played by Michelle Monaghan, as the trio strives to uncover the sinister truth behind the abductions.
Adapted from Alex North’s 2019 novel, the film weaves together classic thriller motifs such as vanishing children, elusive serial killers, cryptic clues, and psychological tension. Despite these elements, the storyline’s predictability and conventional twists hinder the creation of genuine suspense, making it a familiar narrative within the genre.
While De Niro’s portrayal of Pete is notably restrained and detached, Scott finds it challenging to convincingly convey Tom’s emotional struggles. The Whisper Man’s dark visual aesthetic and inconsistent pacing further detract from its overall impact, leaving viewers wanting more.
In its final act, the film attempts to heighten the tension through a series of confrontations and revelations. However, these efforts fall flat, lacking excitement and leading to an unsatisfying conclusion. Ultimately, The Whisper Man presents a recognizable serial-killer mystery but fails to set itself apart from other thrillers.
