Europe has experienced a devastating summer with heatwaves resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths, a figure that is anticipated to rise as more countries finalize their evaluations. Germany, France, and Spain have been hit hardest, contributing to over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany alone reported approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking this period as its most lethal summer due to heat since records began. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the scorching temperatures since May, also setting a grim record.
France reported around 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, although this preliminary figure excludes data from August. Other nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, also saw significant increases in mortality rates during this period of extreme heat. The relentless heatwaves pushed temperatures above 40°C in large swathes of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.
Climate scientists have pointed to climate change as a key factor in the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events. Identifying heat-related deaths poses a challenge, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions rather than being directly noted as the cause of death.
Experts predict that the overall death toll across Europe will increase as more delayed mortality data is compiled and as figures from August become available. The surge in deaths underscores the escalating public health risks associated with increasingly severe heatwaves. This summer’s toll serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the impacts of climate change on public health.
