Amid mounting concerns over the burgeoning illegal drug market in Europe, which is valued at approximately €31 billion annually, European Union leaders have urged for enhanced collaboration among EU institutions, member states, and law enforcement agencies. This pressing issue was a focal point of discussions at the EU summit in Brussels, highlighting the bloc’s growing alarm over the ramifications of drug trafficking, organized crime, and the proliferation of new psychoactive substances.
Post-summit, Bart De Wever emphasized that organized crime transcends borders, necessitating a united international effort to combat it. He pointed out that nations with significant ports, such as Belgium, are acutely aware of how criminal organizations exploit global trade routes to their advantage. EU leaders are advocating for a comprehensive approach that integrates public health initiatives, security measures, crime prevention strategies, and international cooperation to effectively tackle the drug trade at every level—from production and trafficking to consumption and rehabilitation.
The summit also addressed concerns about the sophisticated nature of criminal networks, which increasingly utilize encrypted communication tools, online marketplaces, and intricate international supply chains to disseminate illegal drugs across Europe. The leaders underscored the importance of developing a robust strategy to counter these challenges, focusing on enhancing preparedness, safeguarding public health, boosting law enforcement capabilities, reducing drug-related harm, and fostering international partnerships.
As part of these efforts, the EU plans to collaborate with international allies through initiatives like the European Coalition Against Drugs. The summit’s conclusions reflect a commitment to these goals, which align with an earlier agreement by EU home affairs ministers to implement the EU Drugs Strategy 2026–2030. This strategy aims to improve coordination and address emerging threats associated with illicit drugs and organized crime, underscoring the necessity for a cohesive and proactive response to the evolving drug landscape in Europe.
